Natural meat levels in a dog’s diet
Contrary to commonly held views on the internet, dogs cannot survive on an all muscle tissue diet. Although high in protein, muscle tissue is deficient in calcium, phosphorus, sodium, iron, copper, iodine and several vitamins. It is true that in the wild, the distant ancestors of dogs survived on freshly killed meat. However, they also consumed their entire prey including bones, organs, and intestinal contents. Most prey in the wild were herbivores and therefore the gut contents contained mainly plant based materials. So, the wild ancestors and our domesticated dog are more like omnivores than carnivores. Modern research shows this is the case and that the domestic dog’s digestive system has further evolved with enzyme processes to digest even higher levels of carbohydrate. There is therefore a balance when formulating the perfect diet for dogs and levels of meat between 40-60% seem appropriate.
